Descriptive Analytics:
This is regular Business Intelligence (or “BI”) that involves lot of report generation for daily/ monthly tracking of key numbers and KPIs. The key question it answers is “What is going on with business?”
Prescriptive Analytics:
This is about working with datasets to perform deep dives to understand root cause, conduct exploratory analysis, test hypotheses etc. The key is to come up with “why is something happening, what are the implications and what to do about it?”
Predictive Analytics:
This entails lot of modelling work (simplest example being Regression) to answer “what would happen in future?”
